Bulova watches began with Joseph Bulova, who immigrated to New York City from Bohemia. In 1875, Joseph was just twenty-three when he set up his first small jewelry shop. The Bulova Company possessed its first plant during 1911. The plant specialized in manufacturing watch components. Bienne, Switzerland, was where the watches were finalized with jeweled movements.
During 1919, Bulova timepieces were used by World War One soldiers. The watches proved to be quite useful. In the same year, the first line of jeweled wristwatches for men debuted. During 1923, Joseph Bulova acquired the Bulova Watch Company, Inc. title. From then on, every device came with ten thousandth of an inch precision. A feminine line of timepieces was brought into play during 1924. These products came with diamond accented pieces.
The years of 1926, 1927 and 1928 were big for Bulova. The Bulova Company was the first to broadcast a radio commercial to the entire nation and they also brought the first clock radio to the world. In 1941, the 1st television commercial was aired by Bulova. During World War Two, the American government and Bulova worked together in order to support the armed forces with specially made timepieces, and advanced technology for airplanes, and watches, as well as torpedo mechanisms and fuses.
In the beginning of 1960, the Accutron was announced by Bulova. This device became one of the biggest pieces of technology for Bulova. Tuning fork technology was used in the construction of the Accutron. This timepiece was then able to track time much more efficiently than any other introduced product. NASA liked the technology so much they used the devices for the Apollo expedition. In 1967, Air Force One deemed the Accutron their preferred watch.
During 1968, the Satellite Clock by Bulova was introduced. This clock went on to become the 1st public clock in the world that displayed time using signals from orbiting satellites. Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, the President of Mexico, had it installed in Torre Latino Americana, the highest skyscraper in Mexico. Also, Caravelle became the largest selling watch with jeweled movements within the US in 1968.
Bulova was announced the main supplier of timepieces for the US Olympic Team during 1987. Both the Calgary winter games and the Seoul summer games had players that were supplied with Bulova devices. Bulova continued to expand across the world, reaching to South America and signing a distribution agreement with them in 1995. The Far East and Europe signed licenses with Bulova.
During 2000, Bulova and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani celebrated their 125th anniversary. The following year, the company acquired the Wittnauer trademark as well as the Harley-Davidson watch licenses. During a survey in 2001, women were asked which brand they thought had luxurious accessories and apparel; Bulova was in the fourteenth spot.
By 2002, assets of Heirloom were claimed by Bulova. Also in this year, Canada, Mexico and the United States were purchasing grandfather clocks. In Europe, Bulova opened their headquarters in Fribourg, Switzerland. With the opening, Bulova began producing the European Collection by Bulova. The collection later released on January 1, 2003.
